Present and future

In the late 1980s, there were no farmers markets in Netherlands. A few motivated people started in June 1987 the first market day of the Dutch farmers' market with only eight small but enthusiastic traders. And the city was also enthusiastic. The first Dutch farmers market was born. In the years that followed, the market grew. Many small farmers have managed to keep their company afloat thanks to the market. Saturday became a favorite day because of the quality of the products, the people, the music, the cosy atmosphere and the coffee with the best Apple Pie in the cafe at the corner of the Noordermarkt.

On 10 February 1988 a neighborhood meeting took place to redesign the Noordermarkt. On market days the square should remain open to cars. In 1993 the restoration starts of the exterior of the Noorderkerk which is more or less completed in June 1995. The last twenty years, the Noordermarkt develops into a special market with a unique range of antiques and curiosities, ethnic art, stained glass and crockery, textiles, garments, second hand books, graphic art and paintings. There are also entrepeneurs who create jewelry and bags, clothing, hats and caps.
