Paper nr 2: market as social fabric
There had to be a sequel to our newspaper/wrapping sheet no. 1 (400 years of Noordermarkt) and about the people who work at the market today. Newspaper/wrapping sheet no. 2 was presented on Saturday 18 January 2025 at the Noordermarkt. At a temperature of around 0 degrees, a cup of mulled wine or hot chocolate was a delicious drink to toast to 2025 together (photo left). We toast to the continued existence of the Noordermarkt and actually also to all other markets in Amsterdam. We are grateful to the creative team (photo right) from left to right Akelei Hertzberger (unique jewelry), Eliane Beyer (graphic designer at Joseph Plateau) and Fabian (photography) on Instagram The eyes of the street for this beautiful edition, which was again very positively received by the public. In this 2nd edition, the market entrepreneurs introduce themselves to the public. Both good for the solidarity among each other, but also for the customers and tourists who have the Noordermarkt close to their hearts.
We introduce ourselves in this second paper to you to give you an insight into what goes on behind the market trader and what drives them to be on the market. Not everyone is mentioned in this newspaper, but an inspiring book about the Noordermarkt is coming out. More information about the content of the book Streetwise. Look for more info about the Noordermarkt on Present and future of the Noordermarkt.

A part of an interview with ELIANE BEYER: 'In addition to study assignments, we made posters, program sheets and a few other odds and ends for Desmet. One of the visitors was AKELEI HERTZBERGER, who in turn introduced us to the NAi, the Netherlands Architecture Institute (now: Het Nieuwe Instituut), where she worked. That was our first, real serious assignment, the book Follies for the Floriade (1989). The entire Interview with Joseph Plateau from 2018.
On October 27, 2025, AMSTERDAM will be 750 YEARS old and we will celebrate this for a year. Together with all the inhabitants of Amsterdam and everyone who cares about the city. It is about connecting people and that is mainly what this newspaper/packing sheet no. 2 is about. At night and in bad weather and in all kinds of weather, the market entrepreneurs set up their stall. It is getting up very early and working hard, but the contact with each other, regular customers, tourists from home and abroad and a nice sale make up for a lot.
