Since 1623 Noordermarkt

Nine students from the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture conducted research into the market in the autumn of 2021 under the name 'Stormanker'. Urban planning student Quirine Hoek: "I have only just discovered how important the market is for the social fabric of the city. It is the place where everyone is welcome and can have a chat. Markets are the social centers of the city."

And the Noordermarkt has not lost any of its popularity. The Princenmarkt has played an important role since 1616, after completion of the Noorderkerk in 1623, the market will be renamed Noordermarkt. If we go back in time to around 1616 many craftsmen settle in the Jordaan, such as rope makers (Lijnbaansgracht), beer brewers (Brouwersgracht) and tanners (Looiersgracht). Remarkable at that time are women such as Barber Jacobs, who worked as a distributor and appraiser (sworn appraiser of goods for auctions) in Amsterdam. Her second son Pieter Lastman became a painter and his works belonged to the Baroque period. He appears to be one of the Old Dutch Masters and is also one of Rembrandt's teachers.

Selling 2nd hand clothing and goods appears to be a good formula that still works well after 400 years. The Noordermarkt was way ahead of its time in a number of respects and is still an experience and meeting place par excellence. The Noordermarkt has weathered the Corona period reasonably to well and is flourishing like never before. Existing and new market entrepreneurs are once again creating a vibrant market and are doing everything they can to ensure that the Noordermarkt exists forever.
